The Salvation Army Opens New Winter Overflow Shelter
PITTSBURGH (December 13, 2023) – The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division will be opening its doors to serve as a temporary overflow shelter in Pittsburgh for women without homes this winter. The additional space will complement The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center, a family shelter, located at 6017 Broad Street in the East Liberty neighborhood. This emergency shelter will be open Monday, December 18, 2023, through Sunday, March 31, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The overflow shelter will be on a first come, first served basis each night. Guests who stay overnight will receive lodging and dinner, breakfast and a snack each day. The Salvation Army will also offer access to case management services.
"The winter months pose a life-threatening risk to unhoused individuals,” Sherry Rorison, Director of The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center said. “The Salvation Army is proud to open this new lifeline – a warm haven for women, when other shelter options are overflowing. Homelessness can happen to anyone, and we want our doors to remain open, offering essential services and support to those who need it most. Together, we can bring hope and warmth during these cold winter months.”
This emergency shelter will be for individual women. The new section will provide 20 additional beds, bringing the total capacity of The Salvation Army’s Family Caring Center up to 60 people. Staff will always be onsite 24/7 to ensure the health and safety of all in the facility.
