PITTSBURGH (August 21, 2023) – Thanks to generous support from Peoples Natural Gas, The Salvation Army will take students from Rochester, Pennsylvania on a special shopping trip with former Pittsburgh Steeler Matt Spaeth. Registration is full; the students have already been selected. Journalists are invited to cover this event beginning at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22 at the DICK’s Sporting Goods in Cranberry Township. Matt Spaeth, a former standout NFL tight end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be helping children pick out new shoes for the new school year along with employee volunteers from Peoples Natural Gas.

“In addition to a brand-new pair of shoes, this effort will help children start the new school year off on the right foot and help boost their confidence in the classroom and beyond,” Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania said. “Our ongoing partnerships with Peoples Natural Gas, DICK’s Sporting Goods and the Steelers are a perfect example of the generosity we have here in Pittsburgh.”

Salvation Army back-to-school events and after-school programming are vital for millions of families living paycheck to paycheck. “We are honored and excited for the chance to partner with The Salvation Army and help these students with a new pair of shoes as the new school year begins." Peoples President Mike Huwar said. “Our team is always searching for ways to give back to the communities we call home, like Rochester. We’re glad to play a small part in making life better for these students."
