The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Raises $2.2 Million Across Western Pennsylvania

Feb 4, 2025

PITTSBURGH (February 5, 2025) – The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division raised more than $2.2 million across 28 counties during the 2024 Red Kettle Campaign. The local branch of the worldwide organization raised nearly 95 percent of the total fundraising goal of $2.34 million. In Allegheny County, The Salvation Army raised an estimated $502,667, more than 90 percent of the total fundraising goal of $557,000. Since 1891, The Salvation Army’s iconic sights and sounds of Christmas bells and Red Kettles have been synonymous with the season of giving. The annual Red Kettle Campaign ensures The Salvation Army can continue critical services including feeding initiatives, rent and utility assistance, seasonal assistance, youth empowerment and spiritual programs.

“Christmas may be over, but the need for our services continues throughout the year,” Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania said. “We are filled with gratitude for the support we received during this past season of giving. Thanks to every person who donated and volunteered their time at a Red Kettle, we can continue to be a vital resource for our neighbors in need providing warm meals, rental/utility assistance and so much more for hard-working families throughout the entire calendar year.”

Traditionally, the Red Kettle Campaign spans Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. Due to a late Thanksgiving holiday, the nonprofit lost a few critical days of fundraising. The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania offered ways for community members to donate digitally at anytime from anywhere via text, QR codes and through Virtual Red Kettles online. Thanks to an anonymous angel donor, on the Saturday before Christmas, donations were matched up to $5,000 in local communities in critical need. At the conclusion of the campaign, donations were still down significantly year-over-year in Bradford, Clearfield, Latrobe, Mon Valley (Donora), Steel Valley (Homestead) and Warren, Pennsylvania. These areas need increased community support.

Every gift to the Red Kettle Campaign stays in the community where it is given and benefits families and individuals where we live, making it possible for The Salvation Army to deliver life-changing programs and services throughout the year.
