The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division Needs Increased Support

Dec 24, 2022

PITTSBURGH (December 24, 2022) – The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division is in need of financial support as the organization’s most important fundraiser of the year comes to an end. The goal is to raise $2.294 million both in-person and through digital donations. The annual Red Kettle Campaign supports families and individuals across 28 counties, and ensures The Salvation Army can continue its critical services including feeding programs, rent and utility assistance, seasonal assistance, youth empowerment and spiritual programs.

At last count, the Division has raised an estimated $1.58 million across 28 counties, almost 69 percent of the total fundraising goal of $2.294 million. The fundraising goal for Allegheny County is $565,500. So far across the county, The Salvation Army has raised an estimated $326,438, which is 58 percent of the total goal for Allegheny. Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Valley, McKeesport and Steel Valley locations, along with The Salvation Army’s Aliquippa, Jeannette and Washington Corps, have raised less than 50 percent of funding goals and need the community’s increased support. Digital donations have become increasingly important as the physical red kettles end on December 24. The cold weather has also had an impact on contributions during this critical time.

“We have taken a hit with the bitter cold weather on what are our busiest two days of collecting at the Red Kettle,” said Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander, The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division. “People are our most treasured asset. Whenever possible, our kettle volunteers and workers will be standing indoors for their safety. We thank our generous corporate partners for their support and understanding as our last day approaches. We also encourage community members to give from the safety of their homes via our website.”

Donations can also be made virtually at any time by visiting salvationarmywpa.org/LoveBeyond. Every donation placed in a red kettle goes directly back into the community where it is received. We thank our Allegheny County Red Kettle Kickoff Sponsor PNC Bank for their continued support. Monetary donations can also be dropped off directly at PNC branches throughout Western Pennsylvania through December 31, 2022.

Celebrating over 150 years of global service as both a church and a social service organization, The Salvation Army began in London, England in 1865. Today, it provides critical services in 132 countries worldwide. The 28-county Western Pennsylvania Division serves thousands of needy families through a wide variety of support services.
