The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division Receives Grant from Bayer Fund

Feb 6, 2023

PITTSBURGH (February 6, 2023) – The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division has received a grant for $30,000 from Bayer Fund, a philanthropic arm of Bayer in the U.S., which will be used to support the Feeding Families for Life campaign in New Kensington, Brackenridge and Greensburg, Pa. Feeding Families for Life helps empower food insecure individuals and families to make informed and affordable choices for good health.

“We are grateful to Bayer Fund for supporting this important initiative,” said Major Gregory Hartshorn, Divisional Commander, The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division. “Food insecurity is an issue that impacts people of all ages in our community. Many across our area are forced to make the difficult decision either to pay bills or put food on the table. This support not only fills empty stomachs, but it will help ensure our neighbors receive the nutrition they need to live healthy lives.”

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division’s Feeding Families for Life campaign ensures fresh, nutritious food is accessible to those who need it. With support from Bayer Fund, The Salvation Army New Kensington location plans to collaborate with community partners to create a garden on property. Funding for the “Love in a Backpack” weekend feeding program in Greensburg will ensure 100 children from two local school districts have healthy food during times when they are out of school. This support will also allow The Salvation Army’s Brackenridge location to prepare healthy meal options to more than 100 adults and youth each week.

“Throughout the years, the grants given through Bayer Fund have helped strengthen our communities across the United States,” said Al Mitchell, President of Bayer Fund. “We’re proud to be able to provide support to develop programs like The Salvation Army’s Feeding Families for Life, that helps combat the critical issue of food insecurity and ultimately helping ensure even more Americans/the community have access to healthy, nutritious food.”

In 2021, Bayer Fund awarded more than $13.1 million to over 3,400 charitable and nonprofit organizations to help address essential needs in Food and Nutrition, STEM Education and Health & Wellness. Over the last five years, nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received more than $75 million.
