The Washington Salvation Army Offering “Baskets of Hope” for Families in Need

Oct 29, 2020 | by Stephanie Rex

WASHINGTON, Pa. (October 29, 2020) – The Washington Salvation Army is providing “Baskets of Hope” filled with all the components of a warm, Thanksgiving meal for families in need this holiday season.

The baskets will be available for pick-up, provided to the community in a socially-distant and safe way during the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations are needed to support this important program and Washington County families and individuals in need. Please give today at salvationarmywpa.org/basketsofhope.

“We do this because we truly feel it’s important for people to be able to gather around the table together to enjoy the season,” said Captain Amber Imhoff, Commanding Officer alongside her husband Captain Jason Imhoff at The Washington Salvation Army.

The “Baskets of Hope” will include everything needed for holiday breakfast and dinner: all the traditional sides such as cranberry sauce, stuffing mix and more, along with a grocery store voucher to pick up a turkey breast or whole frozen turkey at Thanksgiving, and a ham or lasagna tray for the Christmas meal. Breakfast staples like pancake mix bring a festive start to each holiday.  Inside, families also will find table games they can play together while waiting for their meal.

Captains Imhoff are strong believers in the power of the family meal to heal and offer hope in weary times and are especially sensitive during this time of widespread economic hardship to honor the pride that comes with a homecooked meal.

“For many of our seniors that come for help, they don’t want their extended family to know they are struggling to provide the holiday meal,” Captain Amber said.

Meal ingredients provided in Baskets of Hope “gives them the ability to comfortably say ‘yes’ when their family calls them to find out what time dinner is. For families with young kids, we don’t want them to have to go to a soup kitchen and know their parents are struggling.  We want them to be able to truly enjoy the day together,” said Captain Amber.

Please call 724-225-5740 to sign up for a Basket of Hope and to verify that your zip code is served by The Washington Salvation Army. Pick-up of the baskets will occur on Nov. 16 through Nov. 20 between 10 a.m. and noon at The Washington Salvation Army, 60 E. Maiden Street, Washington, PA 15301. Please bring a photo I.D.

Each household is only eligible for to receive Thanksgiving assistance from a single location. Baskets are not available for clients who already receive turkey assistance from an area food bank.
