The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division is proud to launch the JM Scholarship and Mentoring Program, in honor of John and Mary Grassinger. Scholarships are available for high school seniors from The Salvation Army’s 28 County service area.

The JM Scholarships will serve high school seniors from families who demonstrate financial need within The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division's 28-county service area. Eligibility will be determined competitively, based upon financial need, academic record and record of community service.

In addition to scholarship awards, the program will also make available Mentoring I - Supplemental Scholarship Opportunities and Mentoring II - Informed Career Direction.

Students will participate in both mentoring programs for the remainder of their high school senior year, affording them consultation via email, phone and/or Zoom/Microsoft Teams.

Mentoring I will provide students with direction and referrals on additional scholarships that Financial Aid Specialists will resource for them and support in completing the application protocols. This will also elevate their standing and access to other funding sources by providing written recommendations and references in support of their new scholarship applications. Financial Aid Specialists will make scholarship recipients aware of the hundreds of millions of dollars available, that often go unclaimed, and will provide the informed candidates professional advice, direction and recommendations on available scholarships worthy of their consideration. In addition, Specialists will write recommendations that will be submitted on behalf of recipients. These references will be based upon the detailed applications recipients have already completed as part of our scholarship process, including the submission of all of the necessary academic, community service and financial need documentation that permitted their award. This will be a vital first step to gaining a fuller understanding of the available scholarship pools students can tap into for the remainder of their academic experience.

Mentoring II will provide direction in career selection through digital and phone contacts. Mentoring Specialists will be available until the beginning of fall classes.

Applicants must be residents of Pennsylvania, residing in the Western Pennsylvania 28 County service area.

  • Applicants must be from a household with a low or moderate income (<80 percent Area Median Income) as determined by proof of the household’s gross annual income. Applicants receiving Medicaid/CHIP, TANF, or SNAP need not provide proof of income.
  • Applicants must be candidates for graduation from their high schools (or for receiving a GED certificate) in the current year.
  • Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and are required to complete the application packet, letter of recommendation and an essay as outlined in the application.
  • The following criteria will be considered when reviewing applicants and selecting scholarship award recipients: financial need, academic merit, community service as well as eligibility requirements established and set forth by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Scholarship winners must be accepted by a degree granting college or university, or by an accredited institution of higher learning or training such as community college, trade school, nursing school, etc. to receive the scholarship.
  • Scholarships will be awarded regardless of the applicant’s race, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, sexual identity or physical handicap.

Scholarships are one-time "seed scholarships" that will finance part of the first year of college studies. The early scholarship award date (January 31 of the senior year in high school) will prove recipients' legitimacy for additional funding from other scholarship providers.
