Every year, parents must choose between giving their children gifts or paying bills. Individuals facing poverty often spend the holidays without the warmth of a shared meal or even a support system.

The holidays bring added financial and emotional stress to families and individuals living in poverty. From gifts for children in need to special meals for those who would otherwise go without fellowship on the holidays and meeting other basic needs - we aim to bring joy back into the season.

The Salvation Army's mission shines brightest at Christmas.

We celebrate the birth of Christ by spreading His hope, love and joy to those who are hurting during the holidays and throughout the year. In fact, our services are a direct answer to God's calling to care for the poor, hungry, sick, and displaced.

Adopt-a-Family

Families, businesses and other groups often adopt a family and work together to provide for their needs. This involves providing Christmas gifts and food for a family that has suffered severe hardship or tragedy within the past year. Their needs are more than what our normal Christmas Assistance can provide.   Email Trudy.Medina@USE.SalvationArmy.Org to adopt a Rochester family in need and help them have a better Christmas celebration.

Angel Tree

Angel Tree is meant to provide toys to kids who otherwise might not find anything under the tree on Christmas morning. Toys, winter hats, gloves, scarves or clothing for local children in need. We provide businesses, community groups and individual families with "Angel Tree Tags" that list specific items/sizes.  Email ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org to request angels for your location.

 Operation Family Time

This volunteer-lead initiative is designed to promote family togetherness.  We are seeking individuals/groups to build “family time” bag of fun; DVDs, games, a chapter book, snacks and beverages to share with  families who have applied for holiday assistance. Email ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org for more details and to help a family build memories and have fun together.

 Holiday Meals & Food Baskets

The Salvation Army helps bring people together for the holidays by providing everything needed for a traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner at home and hot meals at our centers where hundreds gather. Want to volunteer by collecting, sorting or packing family meals? Email ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org to let us know!

Collections, Food Drives, Telethons and More!

We welcome the Rochester community in heading collections of essential items like toiletries, winter hats/coats/gloves, and non-perishable foods.  Event support is greatest during the holiday season as well; Red kettle bell ringing, telethons, and more.  We can help you find the right volunteer opportunity for your passion and talents at ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org

 Businesses Giving Back

Businesses Giving Back helps organizations of all sizes find the right charitable activity to fit their budget, time and culture.  Take a look at the many ways your business or group can help the less fortunate this holiday season and register what calls to your passion HERE.
