For more than 150 years, The Salvation Army has stood firmly behind individuals impacted by trafficking and exploitation. Today, we remain fully committed to eradicating forced labor and sexual exploitation and ending sexual and gender-based violence. In Greater New York, we created Pearl Essence (Purposed, Empowered, Appreciated, Respected, Loved) to offer first-step services to empower women who are highly vulnerable to trafficking due to their immigration status, extreme poverty, and lifelong trauma.
In 2022 we pivoted the program to include outreach to sex workers on the streets of Queens and Brooklyn. These individuals commonly believe they have no other option and are controlled by a pimp who falsely promises them safety and security. Each month, the mobile outreach team visits the women on the street corners they work and provides a meal and an uplifting gift such as winter gloves or nail polish. Within the packaging we include a card with local resources for free lunch programs, ESL classes, affordable childcare, and how to contact a mobile outreach team. In addition, the PEARL Essence team works closely with law enforcement to help identify opportunities for victims to escape their traffickers or pimps and provides secure housing and assistance in building a new life. We plan to increase the frequency of outreaches and expand to other areas to support trafficking victims with resources and empowerment.
If interested in learning more about Pearl Essence please contact Raissa DiCaterina at raissa.dicaterina@use.salvationarmy.org.
Michael King, a long-time client, volunteer, and employee of The Salvation Army's HIV/Health Home Services center in the Bronx, talks about his struggles and how The Salvation Army served as a beacon of hope in trying times.
Watch Michael's storyIn response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, The Salvation Army opened its Essential Community Solutions Center, previously known as our HIV Health Home. At the Bronx center, we provide intensive medical case management and care coordination to meet the specific needs of New Yorkers suffering from HIV/AIDs, and as of 2012, expanding to other chronic health illnesses, including diabetes, asthma, hypertension, obesity, substance abuse, and mental health disorders.
Today, Essential Community Solution focuses on helping disenfranchised individuals and families in the community to work towards stability and improved health. We provide referrals to mental health and substance abuse services, support groups, nutrition and health education, legal assistance, housing assistance, financial counseling, emergency food, and travel assistance. Once clients develop independence in managing their needs they can graduate from the program and step down in services.

In 2023 The Salvation Army is implementing a new program in New York City called Pathway of Hope. With success in other regions around the country, Pathway of Hope is an intensive case management program for families invested in breaking intergenerational cycles of poverty through holistic lifestyle changes, supported by social workers and pastoral care. Job coaching, financial management skills, and GED preparedness and daycare are offered as part of the program. With success, we hope to expand to other parts of the Greater New York area.
