"You can make a difference. I simply served cheesecake to them. I sat next to them. You don't have to be an expert at anything. Be confident in knowing that your presence alone can make a tremendous difference to someone suffering."
— Kristina Paider, Salvation Army volunteer at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001
Bell Ringing at kettles has been a long-standing tradition of The Salvation Army to generate funds that will help those in need. It started in 1891 with Captain Joseph McFee. McFee, stationed in San Francisco, sought a way to raise money to provide a Christmas dinner for the poor. Inspired by a large pot used to collect donations at a ferry landing in England, he set up a kettle at the Oakland ferry landing, accompanied by a sign reading "Keep the Pot Boiling". The idea quickly caught on, and by 1901, the kettle campaign was born!
You can uphold this tradition and make a difference this year in your community by becoming a Salvation Army Bell Ringer! Bell Ringers stand in front of kettles, listening and singing along to jolly holiday tunes as they spread the cheer and cajole passersby to make a donation, raising funds to help sustain our many essential programs.
