Pathway of Hope is a program created for families who are committed to working hard to change circumstances, and require a helping hand along the way. The Salvation Army is committed to going the distance to help these families achieve lasting change.
The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope (POH) initiative in the Greater New York division is a long-term approach implemented to help break intergenerational cycles of poverty. Families with children who are committed to using our strength-based case management, community resources, and pastoral care will be inspired and supported to achieve personal development.
Pathway of Hope believes that hope inspires all that we do.
Pathway of Hope believes that we are better together in all that we do.
Pathway of Hope believes that we should strive to put forth our best in all that we do.
When a single mother with her three children enrolled in Pathway of Hope, she was fleeing domestic violence, depressed, and traumatized. On top of this, she had lost her job. To get by, the family relied on welfare benefits and housing assistance. After joining POH, she got a professional level job and is actively engaged in counseling, as are her children. She moved off most welfare programs and is now receiving minimal assistance from them. Now, she is planning on returning to college to complete a degree that was interrupted by her difficult life circumstances.
To create an environment that produces wrap around services, giving families the opportunity to establish a support system through TSA’s services, programs, and ministry. This dedicated team of pastors, case managers, and community partners will provide the necessary tools for participants committed to personal development through Pathway of Hope.
Identify highly motivated families with at least one child, under the age of 18, who expresses a sincere desire to work towards changing their circumstances.
Pair families with a case manager to assess their situation, identify strengths, and set measurable goals. Pastoral care is highly recommended and available to help achieve living hope.
Connect families with TSA’s internal resources alongside a collaboration of external community resources and opportunities, aligned to the goals of the families.
Tracking family progress along the way with follow ups through regularly scheduled meetings.
POH requires families to achieve self-sufficiency for completion. Input from participating families is valued for program improvement.
After losing everything to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, a family joined the Pathway of Hope program. When they arrived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, none of them spoke any English, making things difficult for some time. Through the family’s participation in the POH initiative, the father was able to secure a job. Their daughters struggled in school, but with time they succeeded academically and learned English. Once a nurse on the island, the mother used the resources provided by POH and pursued her nursing license in Pennsylvania and is now working in the medical field.
