Food Insecurity

Food insecurity has become an increasingly pervasive concern throughout New York. The soaring rates of inflation, rising grocery prices, and a growing homeless population have contributed to a dire situation. In fact, in 2022, we witnessed an astonishing 55% surge in demand for The Salvation Army's food assistance programs. Unfortunately, this upward trend shows no signs of abating.

To compound the issue further, the reduction in SNAP benefits in March 2023 for low-income individuals and families is expected to exacerbate the need for food assistance throughout the year. As the summer break approaches, Salvation Army Day camps become a crucial lifeline, providing children with what might be their only meal of the day. Furthermore, the influx of migrants arriving in the city from the Southern border has directed many to seek assistance from The Salvation Army for food and immediate necessities.

At the core of our mission lies a deep commitment to improving the health and well-being of our neighbors. Our soup kitchens and food pantries often serve as the first point of contact for those in need of help. Beyond providing nourishment, our dedicated team, including case workers, social workers, and ministers, actively engage with clients, forging meaningful relationships. We extend our services beyond food distribution, offering assistance with bills, childcare, and access to benefit programs that enhance an individual's mental, physical, and emotional health.
