The Salvation Army is one of the leading disaster response organizations across the world. In New York, our Emergency Services department does not only focus on disaster response and recovery but also on mitigation and preparedness. To ensure long-term recovery, we work with affected families, teach disaster preparedness workshops, and provide direct financial assistance where needed. We also battle the everyday disaster that some New Yorkers are facing with our homeless outreach and partnerships with other NYC non-profit organizations working in the prevention of homelessness.
The Salvation Army operates three residences for homeless New Yorkers, including two shelters for families with children in Queens and a facility for men with substance abuse and mental health diagnoses in Brooklyn. Approximately 300 children sleep in our family shelters every night. In addition to offering shelter, The Salvation Army’s community centers provide ongoing services, creating a community and support system once families leave the shelter system.
While The Salvation Army has our own mobile street outreach team, we know that tackling homelessness is too vast of an issue for one group or agency; therefore, we are a proud member of the Rescue Alliance NYC. As a coalition of faith-based organizations determined to help New Yorkers experiencing homelessness, we share referrals to provide resources, clean and safe shelter, case management, and a pathway to stable, permanent housing.
Contact UsFor over 100 years, The Salvation Army has urgently responded to the most devasting catastrophes to assist those who need it the most. The Salvation Army of Greater New York takes great pride in its history of disaster work – most notably during WW1, the 1919 Flu Pandemic, the September 11 terror attacks, Hurricane Sandy, and the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Our Emergency Services staff often go where disaster strikes; members have responded to various disasters, including floods, fires, hurricanes, pandemics, and humanitarian crises.
Contact UsThe Salvation Army is partnering directly with the New York City Department of Emergency Management to be the official provider of clothing to newly arrived migrants and partnered with multiple other local nonprofits to provide the essentials such as winter coats, shoes, food, toiletry items, feminine hygiene products, grocery store gift cards, and metro cards. In many cases, more specific items are needed, such as strollers or a hot water kettle, so they can cook instant soup or oatmeal without a kitchen. Some of our community centers have designed new programs to meet the unique needs of migrants, creating bi-lingual children’s activities to teach English and providing South American inspired to-go meals for children and parents that they can easily reheat in their shelter.
The Salvation Army will continue to help all who come to our doors and hope to expand programming for this unique community to include English as a second language classes and assistance navigating their new lives.
