We give kids their parents back

Our free programs provide the tools to treat the symptoms - and the root causes - of alcohol and drug dependence.

Every day in America, over 6,500 people are hospitalized for substance abuse

That's 6,500 families - with moms, dads, and kids - disrupted by the effects of drug and alcohol addiction.

“If it weren’t for the salvation army, I’d surely be dead”

Thomas came to The Salvation Army with just the clothes on his back after an attempted suicide. A substance user for over thirty years, He was tired of drugs, felt defeated by life, and just wanted it to end. Thomas graduated the program in February 2019 and gained full-time employment, he reports “I’ve found peace, I’ve found God, I’ve found serenity, I’ve found life back.”

Programs

For over 100 years, The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Centers and Harbor Light Program have offered spiritual, emotional, and social assistance to those who have lost the ability to cope with their problems and provide for themselves. Our free programs provide housing, food, counseling, community, and employment as we work to treat the symptoms, and ultimately the root causes, of prolonged alcohol and drug dependence.

Adult Rehabilitation Centers

The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Centers provide safe havens for men who have been left unable to cope with daily life.  Some residents suffer from PTSD, substance abuse or homelessness. Through this residential work therapy program, they are provided a safe shelter, nutritious meals, group and individual therapy, job training, and emotional and spiritual support.

These centers are completely self-sustaining and are provided at no cost to the residents. Funding for these operations comes from The Salvation Army Family Stores, which sell gently-used donated clothing, furniture and household goods.

Three Adult Rehabilitation Centers are found throughout the Western Pennsylvania Division – in Altoona, Erie and Pittsburgh. If you need help or know someone who may benefit from our program, please contact 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825)

Harbor Light Center

The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division’s Harbor Light Center, located in Pittsburgh’s Northside, is a licensed long-term residential treatment program for men ages 18 or older with substance use disorders, many of whom have significant medical, mental health, co-occurring disorders, legal, and social needs. The Harbor Light Center is The Salvation Army’s only licensed substance use disorder program in the 28 counties of Western Pennsylvania.

The team provides trauma-informed care and offers creative wellness activities. The program allows individuals to set and achieve goals for their lives that include overcoming addiction, re-establishing productive lives, housing, employment, and reuniting with their families. At the Harbor Light Center, men facing uncertain futures see their lives transformed with the professional attention, medical care and guidance they need to become healthy and productive citizens.

Each Year, We Help Equip Over 150,000 People to:

Combat Addiction

Through holistic work therapy, group and individual counseling sessions, spiritual direction, and life-skills development, program members learn to abandon substance reliance.

Build Work and Social Skills

The physical and spiritual components of the program equip members to provide for themselves and others as they set and maintain sustainable employment goals.

Regain Health and Stability

By developing a personal relationship with God as provided by Jesus Christ, many residents learn to depend on God, rather than drugs or alcohol, for hope and relief.

Restore Families

Many who have been rehabilitated are reunited with their families and able to resume healthy daily routines. Kids get their parents back. People get their lives back.
