Being a foster parent is one of the most worthwhile, rewarding things to commit to doing. It's also challenging and takes time, energy, and is an emotional journey. Nationally, 50% of foster parents quit after their first year or their first placement. There are already never enough foster families to care for all of the children needing homes, so this loss of foster families is devastating. The Salvation Army Children's Services recognizes that more support helps foster families feel strengthened and encouraged and able to continue caring for the most vulnerable population on earth: foster children.
To provide the support families need, we are thrilled to partner with Keystone Family Alliance to provide each of our foster and adoptive families with a Care Community.
What Is a Care Community?
A Care Community is a team of volunteers, much like an extended family, who are committed to supporting and serving a foster, adoptive, or kinship family and all the children in their care. The family lets their Care Community know what kind of supports they need and their requests can range from childcare, to transportation, to meals, to help with household chores, to prayer support, and more. The Care Community even continues to offer encouragement and support if the foster children leave the family's home for any reason. When it comes to caring for precious children who have experienced so much hurt, it really does take a village and Care Communities are that village. And the village that is a Care Community ensures that precious, vulnerable children will be able to find the safety, care, and love that they need in wonderful, fully supported families.
“We have had an active Care Community for almost a year now and they are truly our village. They provide weekly meals, babysitting as needed, and help with transportation when it’s needed. With two full time working parents, these things have been the greatest blessings to us and have allowed us to do all that we do. On top of all of this, they surround us in constant prayer support, and it literally carries us through our days. We are forever grateful for this group of people that we call our Care Community!"
