The Salvation Army Developmental Disabilities Program (DDP) has operated in Delaware for over 42 years. It provides a Residential Program and Day Services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. Currently, 100 staff members work toward the goal of the program: to make sure everyone becomes an integral part of our community and achieves their potential.

Our Mission

Our mission is to enable people with disabilities to live as citizens in their local communities, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. We are committed to serving the community by recognizing the gifts that each person brings to their home and community by supporting efforts to achieve their fullest potential.

Residential Program

The Residential Program consists of 15 individual homes throughout Sussex County serving 43 individuals. Support is provided as needed based on individual needs which can be a couple of hours a week or 24 hours a day.

Staff assist residents with daily living skills such as bathing, getting to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and most importantly, living their best life!

Community Options Program

The Community Options Program gives attendees the opportunity to enjoy, participate, and make a difference in their community.

There are a variety of options to select from, such as volunteering with other non-profits, taking a hike at a Delaware State Park, visiting a local store, or just having fun where they live.

Supported Employment Program

The Supported Employment Program has helped hundreds of individuals find meaningful work in their community. Everyone is supported to become a full and contributing member of the community. Individuals are encouraged to develop meaningful relationships with community members and natural support networks within the larger community.

The Creative HEARTS program is focused on providing to its gifted artists the same opportunities for creative expression that all artists enjoy — learning new techniques, working in a multitude of mediums, and sharing their works of art with the community.

Creative HEARTS works have been shown at the Millsboro Art League gallery, Delaware State University, Gallery 50, the Delaware Museum of Art and at a variety of community events. Designs have been used by The Salvation Army for Divisional Christmas cards. Local businesses in southern Delaware and Philadelphia continue to support the program in local communities.

Creative HEARTS artwork is available for sale as greeting cards, Christmas cards, prints, and original framed paintings and mixed-media works, with all proceeds directly benefiting the artists and funding the program for many more to enjoy.
