You are not alone. The Salvation Army is here for you.

Sometimes life does not turn out how we planned. Our emergency, transitional, and permanent housing options across Philadelphia can help. At The Salvation Army, we have an open door policy when it comes to those needing help with housingwhether they need a place to rest their head at night or assistance finding a way to stay in their own home. All are welcome, and every night we work to ensure hundreds of men, women, and children sleep safely and dream of a better tomorrow.

Type of Housing

Homeless Shelters: Emergency shelter for homeless families (includes men, women, and children).

Supportive Housing: A permanent housing program for individuals and families who require additional supports to be successful in living independently.

Housing for Older Adults: Senior citizen residences in two apartment complexes, exclusively for low-income adults, age 62 years or older.

Emergency housing for Families

The Eliza Shirley House and The Red Shield Family Residence

The Salvation Army Red Shield Family Residence and Eliza Shirley House both provide emergency housing services for homeless families 365 days of the year. Through the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Homeless Services, families are referred to either the Eliza Shirley House or the Red Shield Family Residence for emergency shelter until a more permanent solution is provided.

 Supportive Housing

We want to help people find a place to call home. When you need a more long-term solution, one of our permanent housing facilities may be a better fit. The Salvation Army Reed House located in the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia is a 66-unit residence for single individuals.  Services available to residents include case management and drug and alcohol counseling.

 Senior Housing

The Salvation Army operates two senior citizen apartment complexes in the city of Philadelphia in partnership with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Through this partnership, qualified seniors are housed in their own apartment at an affordable rate. Older adults at both residences enjoy the companionship of other residents through activities, outings, and informal gatherings in our resident lounges.
