Every year, parents must choose between giving their children gifts or paying bills. Individuals facing poverty often spend the holidays without the warmth of a shared meal or even a support system.
The holidays can bring added financial and emotional stress to families and individuals living in poverty. From gifts for children in need to special meals for those who would otherwise go without fellowship on the holidays and meeting other basic needs - we aim to bring joy back into the season.
Thanksgiving Distribution:
We bring folks together for the holidays during our Thanksgiving Distribution on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. In 2022, we provided over 970 families with Thanksgiving Dinner.
Angel Tree
Our Angel Tree program provides warm winter clothing, toys, and other needed items to children up to 12 years of age. Families can sign up for assistance during the month of October through an in-person interview with trained volunteers. Additionally, we assist seniors and veterans with small needs that they may have. View all of our 2023 Angel Tree participants here.
Adopt-a-Family
All families should be able to experience the joy of Christmas morning. Our Adopt-a-Family program allows local agencies, participating businesses, and groups to meet more comprehensive material needs for families beyond toys and food for Christmas. Each year, The Reading Citadel Salvation Army provides this service to 15 or more families.
