Learn to Swim at the Kroc

Swim Lessons 

The Salvation Army Kroc Center of Philadelphia offers swim lessons for all ages and skill levels in a safe and supportive environment. Our certified instructors focus on building water confidence, improving technique, and promoting water safety.

Group Lessons

Adult Beginner Swim Lessons

It’s never too late to learn how to swim! Are you afraid of the water or have you never participated in formal swim training? Adults will learn to become comfortable in the water and practice basic stroke mechanics, including freestyle and backstroke, during this 45-minute lesson. Now is a great time to get back to basics!

Adult Intermediate Swim Lessons

Our intermediate class is designed for adults (18+) who can swim complete laps and are comfortable in deep water. This class will take place in the competition pool and will focus on stroke mechanics and technique refinement. This session is suitable for fitness swimmers, as well as those who participate in competitive events. The curriculum will be designed around the goals of the class participants.

Pre-School Beginner Swim Lessons

Get your face wet and learn how to swim! Children ages 3-5 with no previous swimming experience will become independent in the water during this 30-minute session. Our goal is to build each child’s confidence through skills that include basic paddling, kicking, and “face in the water” activities. We’ll also introduce pool safety, including proper lifejacket fitting and wear. Parents of children who are uncomfortable in the water may be asked to join the lesson.

Pre-School Intermediate Swim Lessons

For children who can perform a front glide and swim without assistance (front and back), we offer this 30-minute class that focuses on stroke development and includes rotary breathing. Your child will progress through more advanced skills that will build his/her confidence in the water!  Kroc coaches will work with parents to determine child readiness for this level of instruction.

Early School Beginner Swim Lessons

Swim to win! Children ages 5–7 learn basic stroke mechanics and develop endurance during this 30-minute lesson. Successful swimmers will perform a front glide unassisted and swim partial pool lengths, both front and back, without a flotation device. We also emphasize water safety in all classes. Please note that parents of children uncomfortable in the water may be asked to join the lesson.

Early School Intermediate Swim Lessons

Children ages 5–7 continue building confidence, endurance, and stroke technique during this 30-minute lesson. Swimmers should already be comfortable in the water and able to swim partial pool lengths without a flotation device.

School Age Beginner Swim Lessons

Swim to win! Children ages 7–10 learn basic stroke mechanics and build endurance during this 30-minute lesson. Successful swimmers will perform an unassisted front glide and swim partial pool lengths (both front and back) without flotation devices. Water safety is emphasized in every class!

School Age Intermediate Swim Lessons

Children ages 7-9 who can swim a partial pool length without assistance (while demonstrating rotary breathing) will continue to build swimming endurance and confidence through repetition of basic swimming skills.  We will even advance from our water park to our lap pool with this group!  Kroc coaches will work with parents to determine child readiness for this level of instruction.

Pre-Teen/Teen Beginner Swim Lessons

Begin with the basics and build confidence! Youth ages 11–16 work to feel comfortable in the water, learn basic self-help rescue skills, and begin developing swimming skills including front and back crawl. The successful student will be able to swim partial pool lengths without assistance by the end of this class cycle.

Parent & Child Swim Lessons

Our parent and child class introduces children to water safety through activities that include proper water entry, blowing bubbles, front and back kicking, floating, and underwater exploration. Parents provide a safe atmosphere in the water with their children, supporting and encouraging all activities during this 30-minute class. We do require swim diapers for children not toilet trained.

Senior Beginner Swim Lessons

Designed for adults ages 55 and over who are already comfortable in the water, this class builds on foundational swim skills while improving technique, coordination, and endurance. Participants will continue developing stronger independent movement, breathing, and overall water safety awareness in a supportive environment.

Youth Requirements

  • Arrive early to check-in and familiarize your child with the facility. Please have your child ready for class at the start of the lesson time.
  • Students without an active Kroc membership will be provided entry to the facility no more than 20 minutes prior to their scheduled lesson.
  • Group lessons are 25 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for transition and parent communication unless otherwise noted.
  • Check-in at the swim lesson table when you first walk onto the pool deck.
  • Have your child go to the bathroom before lessons. Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper and plastic pants (available for purchase at the Front Desk) to prevent bathroom incidents in the pool.
  • Classes will be cancelled and a refund issued if we experience lightning or mechanical issues. Make-up lessons are not available and no other refunds will be given.
  • Each Preschool/Youth class has total of only six participants. The parent and child classes can have up to 12 participants.

  • For chaperones planning to arrive after the lesson has started, our Welcome Desk must be made aware of this at the time the student enters.
  • Only active Kroc members and their paid guests are permitted to use the pools during the lessons program.
  • Group lessons are 25 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for transition and parent communication unless otherwise noted.
