Spreading Holiday Cheer with The Salvation Army: Thanksgiving Feasts and Winter Warmth

Nov 20, 2023 | by Margherita Teta

Gobble, gobble! As the holiday season approaches, The Salvation Army is once again gearing up for its heartwarming tradition of bringing festive cheer to the streets of New York. Each year, our dedicated community centers come together to make Thanksgiving a truly special occasion for our unhoused neighbors. It's a time for gratitude, delicious meals, and the spirit of giving.

Feasting with 14th Street: A Thanksgiving to Remember

One of our biggest Thanksgiving feasts takes place at our 14th Street location, where we welcome over 1,000 unhoused neighbors with open arms and plates filled with all the traditional trimmings. Imagine a hot Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and, of course, a slice of pumpkin pie. It's a heartwarming celebration of togetherness, and The Salvation Army is honored to be a part of it.

But the festivities don't stop at food. This year, we're excited to announce that one of our generous donors has gifted us with over 1,000 winter coats to distribute to our guests as they leave the holiday dinner. It's our way of ensuring that everyone stays warm and cozy throughout the cold winter months.

Serving Thanksgiving Across the Division: A Community-wide Effort

The Salvation Army is not just about one location; it's about the entire New York Community coming together. Throughout the division, our community centers work tirelessly to provide turkeys and all the necessary side dishes to families in need. This ensures that they can enjoy their holiday meals together without the burden of expensive grocery bills.

In the spirit of giving, this year, we will proudly serve over 25,000 Thanksgiving meals throughout our soup kitchens and food pantries. In addition, we distributed over 5,500 turkeys to ensure that no one goes without this festive staple on their table. We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donor, CMA-CGM, who provided 1,500 turkeys to our Malcolm X location, brightening the holiday season for countless community members.

Our Ongoing Commitment: Making Holidays Memorable

At The Salvation Army, we understand the importance of ensuring that the holidays are memorable for all New Yorkers. Our goal is to ensure that no one has to choose between paying rent and having a special holiday meal. It's an ongoing commitment that drives us year after year, and with the support of our donors, volunteers, and community members, we are confident that we can make this vision a reality.

As we move into the December holiday season, let's remember the spirit of giving and the joy of coming together. The Salvation Army is here to ensure that no one is left out in the cold, both figuratively and literally. Together, we can make this holiday season a truly festive and heartwarming experience for all New Yorkers.
